Formulating a DT strategy

This week’s paper on digital transformation (DT) strategies by Christian Matt, Thomas Hess and Alexander Benlian discusses how an organization must have a central concept to integrate the entire coordination, prioritization, and implementation of digital transformations and how digital transformation strategies seek to coordinate and prioritize the many independent threads of digital transformation. The paper identifies two key perspectives on digital transformation strategies:

  1. The DT strategies elements that can be ascribed to the following four essential dimensions: use of technologies, changes in value creation, structural changes, and financial aspects. It is essential to closely align the four different dimensions to ensure the successful rollout of a digital transformation strategy and fully exploit its intended effects. This constitutes the digital transformation framework, see Figure below (taken from the paper).
  2. Procedural Aspects and Responsibilities. The procedural aspects that govern the development, implementation, and evaluation of digital transformation strategies.

The paper also highlighs the question of responsibilities of the CDO role, in the planning and deployment of digital transformation strategies and the concrete alignment between the CIO and CDO roles. There is a lot of confusion about the two roles.

The next post elucidates the thin line between CIO and CDO.
